Crafting A Unique and Functional Beer Tower

Unique beer taps
Every home bar needs a kegerator.  There are many approaches to obtaining a kegerator, but making it your own requires some imagination and a willingness to apply yourself to the modification of the inner workings of your home draft system.  Designing a unique and functional draft beer tower modification can be as simple as gluing fabric or fur to the draft tower, or as complicated as creating a LED light-up Plexiglas tube.  When my home brewing friends and speakeasy acquaintances ask me what they can to do spice up their home bar, my first answer usually has to do with modifying the draft tower on their home draft system.  I tell them what I will tell you – the only limit is your imagination.

There are many out of the box options for replacing your draft tower.  Some companies offer kits that can add taps to the tower you already have, and others offer a stylish chrome plated alternative to the thicker tower that is stock on most kegerators.  There are also the towers that allow for multiple taps: Single column double, triple, or even quadruple faucets are available, “T” Style, Mushroom style, Column, Elbow, and even Ceramic Draft towers are available commercially.

These draft towers can be good starting points, especially if you are interested in having multiple types of beers available at the same time.  Many of these designs can stand alone to make your draft beer set-up unique while maintaining function, especially if you do not have a well developed theme for your home bar.

If your home bar does have a well-developed theme, you will need to go one step further with your draft tower to ensure that it stands out.  Having a rotating seasonal theme on your home bar adds some added interest. This is where experience with set design and things like Halloween decorations can come in handy.  What follows are a few examples of some of my favorite unique draft beer tower modifications.

The Orcish Mead Hall

One great home bar theme that is very unique is the Orcish Mead Hall.  This room was outfitted with a large variety of weapons on the wall – swords, clubs, axes, and shields.  There were grisly battle standards adorned with fake severed limbs and the tables and stools were made of rough-hewn wood and stumps.  Naturally, a stainless steel draft tower did not fit in with the theme of the bar.  It was a simple modification to make it fit in, however.

The first thing was to make a bar top that obscured view of the kegerator’s main body.  The top from an old dining room table was cut down and a U shaped notch hole was cut and fitted over the kegerator.  The draft tower was removed and disassembled.  A large Styrofoam rock, or “Fake Boulder” was carved to allow the draft tower to fit into it, giving the impression of a natural spring spewing beer, mead, etc.  The tap handle was removed and a cow bone was fitted with the properly threaded bolt to be mounted onto the tap as the new handle.  The end result was very Orcish indeed.

The Boxing Ring

The Boxing Ring is a speakeasy that had a lot of old boxing memorabilia lining the walls.  The tables had reproductions of old boxing posters from the 1800s through 1950s, stories of various boxers, all laminated with resin to make a smooth and easy to clean table top.  The person who built the bar was a real fan of using that plastic resin to encapsulate different objects for artistic purposes.  So what did she do?  She made a resin cast block with gold painted beer lines and golden painted boxing gloves encased inside.  The block looked for all the world like a huge block of ice with boxing gloves and beer lines frozen into place.  The area immediately surrounding the end of the block was molded hollow with enough room to attach the beer faucet, which was screwed into the epoxy resin.

The Workshop

The Workshop was a home bar that was built into a wood and metal working shop.  It was utilitarian and had a unique function as well – the kegerator, when beer wasn’t being dispensed, looked for all the world like a rolling tool chest with other tool boxes stacked on top.  It wasn’t until the top tool box was opened that the beer faucet was revealed!  Perfect for keeping visiting clients and newbies in the dark about the consumption and location of alcoholic beverages in the work site.

The Rolling Crypt

The Rolling Crypt was a parade float that was pulled by a bicycle and resembled a crypt.  This was no ordinary parade float, however.  The rolling Crypt had four soda kegs hidden inside it, and a variety of black and green tentacles dangling from the rear crypt door.  Inside one of these tentacles was a beer spigot dispensing the Dead Horse Ale from within.  While this was not technically a draft beer tower modification, the same principles of construction could certainly be applied to a draft beer tower, especially if your home bar has a gothic motif.  A tombstone draft beer tower would be fairly easy to present – just make sure to stock up on Halloween decorations in the fall.  Also, stone fountain statues may be easily converted into beer fountains – or at least dispensers.

LED Plexiglass Draft Tower

This project works well in a technological or futuristic environment.  The LED draft tower acts as a kind of new wave lava lamp, and can be programmed to strobe, gently cycle through different colors, or maintain one color.  Your local electronics shop can help you with the circuitry, and the Plexiglass and all the tools needed to build the basis of this draft tower can be had at TAP Plastics or a similar retail plastics outlet.

I hope this article has given you all the ideas you need to come up with your own unique draft beer tower modifications.  Remember, there is no shame in using hot glue!

Mini Kegerators and Beer Tubes Make Great Birthday Gifts

Birthdays.  They come around year after year and are always met with celebration – and gifts.  The good news is that birthdays deserve to be celebrated.  After all, each new birthday means that another year has successfully been completed and the birthday recipient is embarking on a fresh new year in their life.  The bad news, however, is that after awhile, people run out of birthday gift ideas for friends and family members, and rather than birthday gift giving being something enjoyable, it can turn into a chore.

If you’re looking for an interesting gift idea for the people in your life, how about getting them a mini draft beer dispenser or a beer tube?  Of course, it would make sense that you would only get this type of gift for those who enjoy drinking beer, but for those that do, mini kegerators can be a great and fun gift that will be met with lots of “ooohs” and “aaahs”.

A mini kegerator is a very small refrigerator that houses a 5 liter size mini keg of beer.  The refrigerated portion keeps the beer cold and tasting fresh, and there is a beer tap on the exterior of the appliance that dispenses the beer, much in the same way you would have a draught beer dispensed at a bar.  These small appliances are reasonably priced (in the neighborhood of $100 – $300 or so) and are an attractive addition to any home bar, family room, game room or even kitchen counter.  Most mini kegerator models come in a sleek stainless steel design and resemble the looks of an upscale coffee maker or espresso machine.

The great thing about buying a mini kegerator as a birthday gift is that unless your friend or family member is a huge beer enthusiast that is always seeking out the newest gadgets, the chances are probably pretty good that they don’t already own a mini kegerator of their own.  So, rather than them trying to look appreciative even though the gift you bought them is something they already have or aren’t really interested in, the gift of a mini kegerator is sure to please.  If you combine the purchase with a 5 liter mini keg, not only does the kegerator serve as a gift, but it can be part of the birthday celebration as well!

For those that are looking for a birthday gift that is even more unique, a beer tube may fit the bill.  Beer tubes are fun and interesting looking “tubes” that can be filled with beer and have a themed or decorative bottom with a small tap on them.  They are a great conversation piece on a bar or in a family room and can be filled with up to 100 ounces of beer (or around eight 12oz glasses) to be shared with friends or imbibed alone.  Beer tubes come in a selection of popular themes, such as baseball or bowling for sports enthusiasts, or in more subtle designs made of wood or stainless steel.  These quirky beer dispensers add a festive mood to any get-together and are truly a conversation starter.

So, the next time you are at a loss for what to get as a birthday gift for friends and family, assuming they enjoy drinking beer, consider buying a mini kegerator or a beer tube for a birthday gift they won’t soon forget.

Reunions Are Ripe For Kegerators

There’s nothing like a reunion.  Whether you are attending a family reunion, where you get together with members of your extended family that you don’t often see, or a school reunion, where you can meet up again with old school friends that you have lost touch with, a reunion is a once in a lifetime chance to reconnect, reminisce and rejoice.

Draft Beer at Family Reunion
Reunions are much anticipated events and often take lots of care and planning – and they often are accompanied by a good deal of food and drink as well, as everyone takes the time to catch up with one another.  So, with that in mind, it’s easy to see why reunions are the perfect occasion for using draft beer dispensers.

Unless the reunion that’s been organized is for a bunch of school-aged friends, most reunions are rather large events that are well planned in the food and beverage department.  Alcoholic beverages are typically a part of the festivities, and in some cases only beer and wine, or only beer are served to cut down on expenses.

Since everyone loves to have a few drinks while catching up with old friends or family members that have travelled from near and far, having a keg and keg dispenser on hand can be the most efficient and cost effective option for serving beer at a reunion.

Kegerators can be rented if you don’t already own one and are basically the refrigerated compartment that houses a keg or half keg of beer.  You may wonder why you would need the kegerator and can’t just get away with the keg, and the answer is simple – kegs of beer need to be kept cold or the beer tastes lousy and starts to go bad.

Back in your younger days, you may have been okay with just throwing a keg into a bucket full of ice and hoping that it would stay somewhat cold before the keg was emptied, but you can remember how lousy most of that beer tasted.  If you’re serving beer to a crowd of anything other than college aged frat boys, chances are that you at least want to make sure the beer tastes good – and that means you’ll need to keep it good and cold.  A kegerator will do that for you – and will also make an eyesore of a keg look more attractive if it’s being left out in clear view for people to help themselves.

So, if planning a reunion is on your list of things to do in the near future, make sure that someone is taking care of ensuring there’s a kegerator for the beer.  If no one owns a keg refrigerator, or the place you are holding the reunion does not supply one, you can easily rent a kegerator for the night or weekend to use at your event.

By having a kegerator on hand, you can focus on catching up with old friends and finding out what they’ve been doing since you’ve seen them last, rather than reminiscing about what it was like the last time you were drinking warm, lousy beer together.

Graduation Parties Are More Fun with a Kegerator

Years of hard work culminate in graduation from school.  Surely, that is a time to celebrate.  Graduation parties celebrate not only how far the graduate has come, but the excitement of the new life that lies ahead.  Many a graduation is marked by a graduation party – whether a small intimate party just for a few family members or a big blow-out bash that includes members from the graduate’s class.  And when there’s a party, especially one like a graduation party, beer is usually in plentiful abundance.

a graduation kegerator

So, if you’re planning a graduation party for someone special, consider renting a home draft fridge for the event.  Kegerators are the perfect appliance to keep a keg of beer cold all day long and make it easy to neatly dispense beer from the tap.  This means that if you are having an open house party all afternoon in the heat of May, June or July (like many graduation parties are), the beer will stay cold even as the later guests arrive.

Of course, if the graduation party you are throwing is to celebrate a high school graduation, you should use your best judgment about having a kegerator filled with a keg of beer at the party, since most of the guests might be underage.  If that is the case, you do not want to invite trouble by having a bunch of high school kids find out that the party with the keg is at your house.

No, that would not be cool.  But, if you are throwing a college graduation party or a graduation party to mark the completion of grad school, law school, med school or the like, then by all means go ahead and break out the kegerator.  In those instances, you can be sure that having a keg of beer at the party will be a welcome addition to the recent grads.

Another use for a kegerator at a graduation party is as a graduation gift.  No, you probably wouldn’t buy a recent grad a full size kegerator that houses a whole keg of beer (that would be better left for the fraternity they might have just left!).  But, mini kegerators and portable kegerators make for great gifts that are a bit different than the norm and probably won’t be repeated by someone else.

Mini kegerators are small appliances, usually made of stainless steel and pretty nice looking, that house a mini keg of beer (only 5 liters).  They are the perfect size for the new graduate that is just heading out on their own in a new (small!) apartment, but that wants to be able to entertain friends or to just relax after their new job with a frosty, cold one.

For those that are often on the go, portable kegerators, which are also small, allow the new grad to take the party on the road with them (not literally!), so if they are heading back to their old stomping ground for a tailgating party (link) or to visit some frat buddies, the beer can be on hand.  Of course, you should just first make sure that the recipient of your graduation gift is over 21 years of age before presenting them with the gift of a mini or portable kegerator for graduation.  And you should make sure that the graduate will appreciate such a gift, rather than getting a new briefcase, pen set or ipad.

Graduation parties can be the perfect social occasion for setting up the kegerator, assuming the party’s guests are of age.  They also make for easy clean up after the party, since there are not loads of cans and bottles to have to pick up and recycle.  Speaking of recycling, tapping into a keg rather than cases of beer, is an environmentally responsible way to celebrate the big milestone and each half keg of beer can save as much as five pounds of waste from the aluminum or glass used for beer cans and bottles.

Poker Night Is A Great Time To Tap The Kegerator

For many guys across the nation, poker night is a night to get together with a bunch of buddies to shoot the breeze, drink some beer, maybe smoke some cigars, and of course, to play poker.  For those that have a home kegerator, poker night with the guys can be the perfect excuse to tap the kegerator and toss back a few beers while relaxing and having a few laughs.

Home kegerators provide the great tasting draft beer taste that you can otherwise only get at an actual bar.  They keep the beer cold and fresh and dispense the beer through a tap, just as the bartender would at your favorite watering hole.  The great thing about scheduling poker night at the house of whoever owns the home kegerator is that it can make you feel like you’re actually playing the game at your local casino, or in the back room of your local bar.  This can make “guys night” feel that much more authentic and can add to the ambiance surrounding your favorite card game.

In addition to the draft beer you’ll all enjoy from the home kegerator, poker night wouldn’t be complete without some good food.  Pizza is often a favorite of poker night, but depending on how much effort you want to put into the food at your get together, you may also want to opt for a barbecue, where you can make Guinness  sliders, hot dogs, ribs or steak.  Of course, you can also order in wings, Chinese food or some other favorite ethnic food.  Or, everyone can simply bring a snack or two and you can make do with whatever winds up on the table.  For the most part, everyone will be more interested in the great tasting beer than what kind of food is on the menu, so planning the menu doesn’t need to be too big a deal.

If your poker night games include a bunch more guys than would play in any one game at a time, you’ll probably notice that the extras that aren’t in the game will have no problem sitting out if they can hang out around the kegerator and have a beer or two when they’re not playing.  It’ll give friends time to shoot the breeze, tell a few jokes or catch up on each other’s lives.  If there’s also a dart board or a pool table nearby, that’s another good diversion for those that are not playing cards and will surely be a welcome addition to poker night festivities.

Of course, poker night doesn’t only have to be a guys-only night out and can be an equally fun night when there is mixed company or when it’s a ladies-only night as well.  And, whether poker night consists of guys only, girls only or a mixture of the two – and whether it’s a singles night or a night that those who are married get a break from the usual routine, poker night is sure to be a much anticipated night out for all.  Adding in some great tasting draft beer and some good eats are sure to add even more to the card-playing fun!

Housewarming Parties and Portable Kegerators

Welcome To The Neighborhood!

Welcome To The Neighborhood!
Looking for a great way to welcome in the new neighbors down the street? Host a housewarming party for them! You can invite a bunch of people from the neighborhood so that the new family can feel welcomed and can get to know the people that live on their street.

Another way to welcome new neighbors to the neighborhood is to plan the party at their house (with their permission, of course!) and have each person in the neighborhood bring some food or drinks so that the new family is more the guest than a host.

If you want to plan a housewarming party at either your own home or the home of a new neighbor, having a portable mini kegerator (and bringing the mini keg with you to the party) is a great way to add to the festivities. A portable kegerator is basically a small sized appliance, about the size of a coffee maker, which houses a mini-sized keg of beer and dispenses it from a tap. Because of its small size, it is easily transportable, so you can take it with you when the party is somewhere other than your own home. And since a mini kegerator holds as much beer as a bunch of cans or bottles, it is an easy way to show up with the beer for the party, and also serves as a gathering spot for guests during the party.

By setting up a portable kegerator at a housewarming party, it serves as a place where people can gather and can get to know the new neighbors. For some reason, the kegerator becomes the spot to “hang out”, much like you would sit around the bar in a restaurant. Maybe it’s just the great tasting draft beer than no one wants to be far from or maybe it’s just the fact that a mini kegerator is a cool conversation piece that draws attention to a crowd. Whatever it is, having a mini kegerator to gather round is very different than if everyone just takes his or her own can or bottle of beer from a cooler and then disperses. Even better? If you neighbor has a keezer (freezer converted to hold kegs) then you my friend have hit the jackpot!

KeezerA Keezer in its natural habitat

If your neighborhood is extremely social and generous, and always enjoys having a good party, you and your neighbors may even want to consider chipping in a few dollars apiece to buy the new neighbors a mini kegerator as a housewarming gift from the rest of the neighborhood. Check out a cool service call Pay It Square. You can collect/pool money online for a gift.

Of course, before you do so, you should try to find out if the new neighbors even enjoy drinking beer, because if not, this gift may not be very well received. But if they do, it can be a rather unique gift that says “Welcome to the neighborhood! We look forward to spending fun times with you in the future.”

If you’re looking to buy a mini or portable kegerator for the new neighbors as a housewarming gift, you can find models that range in price from around $100 or so to upwards of $300 or more. Mini kegerators often come in a sleek, stainless steel design, so they are sure to go with most any décor and look great on a home bar or kitchen counter. Most can be plugged into a standard electrical outlet at home or can be converted to an adaptor that plugs into a car, truck or RV for those that like to take their party on the road.

Housewarming parties are a great way to welcome new neighbors to the neighborhood, while also being a great way for old neighbors to catch up with one another. Gathering around the portable kegerator – or chipping in to supply the new neighbors with their very own mini kegerator as a housewarming gift – can really be a thoughtful way to let your new neighbors know that you are happy to have them in your neighborhood.

Surprise Party Necessities: Food, Friends, Beer

What’s the  secret to throwing a good surprise party? The secret is that the best parties are all about who’s on the guest list. Good food and good beer are certainly an added bonus, but they’re not the most important thing. I know. I know. This is a blog about kegerators and beer, but good friends and close family are “Numéro Uno” without a doubt.

Kegerator Surprise Party

Decorations and gifts are nice, but they don’t solely make for a good party. So, if you are thinking about planning a surprise party for someone close to you, the most important thing is to make sure that the most important people in their life are present – and that those they don’t like are not.

Once the guest list for your surprise party is taken care of, then you want to think about things like food, drinks and entertainment. If the party is for adults, then alcoholic beverages are usually part of the game plan.

If the host of the party has a home bar, complete with a home kegerator that serves delicious, authentic-tasting draught beer, then you’re in luck because kegerators offer a great option for serving the beverages at the party. If you don’t have an authentic beer dispenser like a kegerator, that doesn’t mean your party is ruined, however. You can see if someone you know has a mini kegerator that you can borrow for the evening, which will still dispense great tasting draught beer. The mini kegerator’s size will allow someone else to easily bring it to the party, and then all you’ll need to do is buy a few 5 liter size mini kegs to put in the beer dispenser to keep the beer flowing all night.

If you can’t get your hands on a kegerator for the surprise party, have no fear. A beer cooler filled with some of the guest of honor’s favorite brand of beer in cans or bottles will do the trick just fine. If there are wine drinkers at the party, you can also make sure to have a few bottles of wine on hand as well. You can even opt to have a fully stocked bar, complete with hard liquor, but doing so can get expensive and is a better option if you’re also hiring a professional bartender.

Aside from beer and other alcoholic drinks, you’ll also want to consider food for your surprise party. The type of food you offer will depend in part on how formal or informal you want your party to be, what type of food your guest of honor and his or her friends prefer, and your budget. You can throw a surprise party with a light menu of just chips and snacks or can have a full meal served. You can be as informal as pizza and wings or can have a fully catered affair with upscale appetizers and decadent desserts. You can plan the whole menu and buy all the food yourself, or you can ask each guest at the surprise party to bring a dish and make the party a pot-luck event. The point is, you have a ton of different options when it comes to the food being served at a surprise party, and you’ll find that whatever option you choose will not change the level of fun the party delivers.

So, if you are planning a surprise party for someone, your first order of business should be to make sure you get the guest list right – don’t leave important people off the invitation list and don’t have people on there that don’t belong. Then take care of things like drinks and food – try to find a kegerator or ask if any guests have a mini kegerator so you can all enjoy some great tasting draught beer throughout the party or stock the cooler full of cans or bottles of beer.

Or, if you have more of a wine drinking crowd, make sure you have enough wine on hand. Then choose a menu that suits the overall mood of the party crowd and your budget. After that, if you are interested and still have time and money left over, you can worry about things like decorations, paper goods, invitations and the like. The truth is that the guest of honor is usually so happy that someone took the time out to plan a party just for them, that their gratitude is in the thought and planning that goes into the party, not the little details that serve as “extras” to make the party a bit more special.

Movie Night: Grab Some Popcorn, Candy and Beer?

Want a great excuse to hang out at home and enjoy some good entertainment and good company? Plan a movie night! Movie nights can consist of just you and your honey, the whole family or a bunch of friends that you invite over for a more social gathering. Then, all you need is a good movie to watch that everyone agrees on, and some food and drinks and you’ve got yourself an “official” movie night party!

Kegerator Movie Night

When most people think of movie night, they think of some of the treats they would otherwise get in their local movie theater. This means that there’s usually plenty of popcorn and possibly an assortment of favorite movie candy, such as Twizzlers, Sno-Caps or whatever people like. But, the nice thing about having movie night at home, rather than heading to the local theater (aside from the big difference in price!) is that you can also have a drink or two while enjoying a good flick – something you can’t do at most theaters, amidst all the popcorn and candy.

For those that have a home kegerator, grabbing a couple of draft beers along with some buttery and salty popcorn is a good combination to enjoy while watching a good movie. Home beer kegerators supply great tasting, cold frosty beer on tap, just like the local bar or pub, or the bar at your favorite restaurant. So, if you have a beer or two from your kegerator, along with some good movie treats while watching a first run movie that you rent, you can enjoy all the benefits of a night out without the hefty cost.

Opting to plan a movie night, either as an intimate evening for two or a group get-together, can save you loads of money over a night out. For one, renting a movie can be a really cheap form of entertainment. You can rent a movie on demand for usually $4 – $6, depending on how new the movie is, can head to a store that rents movies (which will cost you about the same amount as renting them from your cable or satellite provider), can plan ahead to get the movie you want from NetFlix, or you can even find one of those Red Box machines at your local supermarket or other location, which allows you to rent a movie for just $1, if you bring it back the next day. If you’re willing to watch a movie that’s not a first run release, you may even be able to rent the movie for free, so the entertainment portion of your evening will cost you nothing.

Then you’ll continue to save on food and drinks. Rather than a bag of popcorn and a drink costing you an arm and a leg at the theatre, you can probably pop a bag of microwave popcorn for about $1 or less, can eat all the candy your sweet tooth can handle for the price of just one movie-sized box of candy at the theater, and can add in pizza, Chinese food or almost any other type of food you want, and you’ll still probably be ahead of the game financially compared with a night out at the local movie theatre. If you also consider having a few draft beers from your home kegerator rather than making a stop at the local bar after the movie, you’re really starting to add up the savings compared to what it would cost if you headed out.

In addition to all the money you can save by planning a movie night at home, complete with favorite munchy foods and draft beer from your own kegerator, you can enjoy some other benefits as well. You’ll have the privacy of being in your own home, so you can talk with friends if you’re in a group or snuggle up on the couch under a blanket if the evening is just planned for two. You can avoid long lines at the theater, nasty weather outside (the best time to plan a movie night is when the weather isn’t so great anyway), and the need to get dressed to impress.

So the next time you’re in the mood to see a good movie, grab some popcorn, candy and great tasting draft beer, choose a good movie and some good company, and have some fun!

Planning an Oscar Party? Don't Forget The Kegerator!

Once a year, Oscar night is a much anticipated event for movie lovers. What better way to celebrate your favorite movies and movie stars than with an Oscar party? Oscar parties can be the perfect reason to get together with friends and take in the glam of Hollywood. So, if you’re planning an Oscar party this year, what should you have on your “must-have” list? Champagne? Canapes? Beer?

Oscar Party with Kegerator

If your crowd is more interested in drinking beer than champagne, or it’s simply a more practical and economical choice for your Oscar party, then you may want to break out your mini kegerator or tap into your home kegerator, if you have one.

Sure, it’s nice to have free-flowing champagne to get into the Hollywood mood at an Oscar night party, but the fact is that many people don’t like drinking champagne, and even if they do, it gets pretty expensive to supply champagne for a crowd for an entire evening. Instead, you can set up the mini kegerator and let people help themselves throughout the party to great tasting, draft beer. It may not be champagne, but chances are it will be enjoyed by your guests more than the bubbly stuff (and won’t leave you with a nasty hangover the next day!).

Beer in champagne glass

If you want to make your party more glam, you can serve the beer out of champagne flutes rather than beer mugs or simply plastic red cups. You can even find plastic ‘throw-away’ champagne flutes so that you can easily have enough for the whole crowd. Then your “bubbly” can just be fresh, draft beer from the kegerator, rather than expensive champagne, but your beverage choice will stay consistent with your party theme.

Drinks aren’t the only thing to think of when planning your Oscar night party, however. Food is also a big draw at parties such as these. You may want to skip the casual chips, wings and beer for something a bit more upscale to get into the Hollywood theme, but you can easily do so with some easy-to-make appetizers and finger foods that are as fun to eat as they are easy to make.

If you want to make the party really easy on yourself, you can just supply the kegerator filled with beer and ask each guest to bring an appetizer or dessert to the shindig. By doing this, it makes it easy for you to organize the party, and everyone is usually more than happy to show up with a dish to share with friends.

Of course, what’s Oscar night without some glamorous clothes and hairdos? To really get everyone in the mood for your Oscar party, make your party a dress-up night. You can put info on the invitations about what style of dress is most appropriate – you can make the party dress semi-formal, formal attire, or can even suggest that your guests come dressed as their favorite Hollywood actors. Some people prefer to have a more casual party, but if you want to immerse yourself in the Oscar night theme, dressing up can really set the mood.

However you decide to plan your Oscar night party, it is sure to be a fun event that will give everyone a reason to get out of their house on what may be a cold, February night, and enjoy good food and drink with friends while rooting for their favorite flicks and stars.

The Art of the Basement Speakeasy

As much as the authorities would like to ignore it, basement speakeasies have never really gone out of style. If they are hard to find, well that is the basis of their continued existence. If you can’t find one, why not start one up yourself? The art of the basement speakeasy lies in creating a comfortable environment for debauchery to take place. The basement speakeasies have a few things in common: word of mouth, comfort, and hours of operation that pick up where bars legally must leave off.

Picture of basement speakeasy

There are also many bars out there that are legal businesses and evoke the feel of a speakeasy with their decor and furniture. This kind of themed bar is the kind many would always rather go to, and if you plan on making your own basement bar at home, you should look at what others have done and use those designs to inform your building and decor process.

One of the first issues that most home bar owners have to address is the draft system. If you have a kegerator, you are in a good starting place for hosting late night soirees in your own basement bar. You will probably want a mini-fridge with a see-through door as well, for convenience’s sake. Once you have these basics covered, you can consider installing a sink for washing cups and the like.

basement speakeasy kegerator

When you are installing these items into your basement bar, thinking out of the box is going to yield some nice results. Some of the most ingenious designs have come about from changing just a couple of aspects of a draft dispensing design or changing the way the bar is built.

There are two bars in Austin, Texas that have an amazing feeling and sense of decor associated with them that are perfect examples of how to apply this speakeasy style. They are the Eastside Showroom and the Swan Dive, and the same interior designer created them both, Mickie Danae Spencer.

When you walk into the Eastside Showroom, it is just far off the main drag madness of 6th street to be comfortable. The while place looks old, although the bar only opened its doors a few years ago. The venue draws its old style feeling from a combination of exquisite custom made bar furniture, designed and built by the owner, and a lot of antique cut-ups. These cut-ups are a functional aspect of the bar build, but they all have an aspect that is modified from a vintage antique object, such as old milk cans, wine barrels, foot cranked Singer sewing machine bases, port hole windows from sailing vessels, and more.

Looking at a bar like this can give you a deep understanding of how to build something out of junk and make it look beautiful. The important thing about this aspect of design is to have a holistic approach. Take the Eastside showroom, for instance. The interior is beautiful, and most everything is vintage. Vintage cocktails, vintage wood used for the bar, and vintage music is either being played live or old recordings are being played on the stereo. Keep this in mind when designing your theme, and people will be saying – you “thought of everything”.

wood pallet shelves

Using old wooden pallets is an ingenious use of used materials and generally you can find them for free. Try local plant nurseries or landscaping companies, craigslist.org, freecycle.org or hardware shops. They normally have a lot of these pallets on hand and will give them away. Reclaimed wood from old wooden pallets can be transformed into all types of furniture, flooring and wall coverings.

Another local Austin, TX hangout – whose name we cannot mention, due to issues with legality and blacking out – is a surprising example of how a space can be converted into a cute little den of iniquity with little work. This speakeasy appears to be a former neighborhood church on the outside, but once you knock and are introduced in, you have a swank living room with mostly 1960s and 70s style furniture, and a small high table that acts as a bar (on occasion), with a small selection of bottled or canned beers.

This is a place that did not even have any kind of draft system. The owner was informal and friendly to those who came in to this private club. The walls were adorned with some very eccentric odds and ends. The owner claimed that the bottles and fetishes covering the place are things he found while tearing down to rebuild one of the walls. Magical charms that had been hidden away since the old owner, who was a bit of a medicine man in the neighborhood, had passed away. The new owner handled the fetish objects respectfully, and kept them in the room that had formerly been a place for the purveyance of magical charms and elixirs as a reminder of the history of the building. Such treasures are timely and often interesting to the owners or renters of the space in question, and here is an example of how to use these items to add meaningful decor to a space.

If you do plan on dispensing draft beer in your home bar, there are a number of simple modifications you can make to your home draft system to pull it in line with you home bar’s theme. See the article entitled “Hacking Your Kegerator: An Overview of Mods and Add-ons” for more ideas on how to modify your draft tower or change the aesthetic of your kegerator.

For those more interested in drinking than decor, a few vintage or faux vintage beer signs or some neon can be enough. Sometimes the simpler route is easier, but some prefer a drinking venue that has an almost museum like quality of presentation and coziness. The last thing you want to see in a speakeasy bar is a television. This is the most disturbing and mind numbing thing a bar can do – and it seems to be the most common offense. A room full of television screens blaring at the pitiable inhabitants, who are so mesmerized by the screens that they can barely talk to each other. There are alternatives that proffer a sense of being somewhere – or, in the case of these vintage speakeasy style venues – of being somewhen.
