What do President's Day and Kegerators Have in Common?

Presidents Day and Kegerators

Every February, our nation celebrates the birthdays of two of our greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, on a federal holiday known as Presidents Day. The holiday is always celebrated on the third Monday in February, although Washington’s birthday is actually on February 22nd, and Lincoln’s is on February 12th.

On President’s Day, government offices are closed, as are most schools and many businesses. But what does this holiday, that falls smack in the middle of the coldest part of winter, have to do with kegerators? Well, probably absolutely nothing. There were no kegerators around back in the days of Washington and Lincoln, although we’re sure that they still sat around and had their share of “adult” beverages back in the day. But, it is after all a celebration of a birthday – in fact, two birthdays – so what better way to celebrate a birthday than to break out the kegerator and have a party!

Ok, so it might not be your birthday, or even your friend’s birthday, but nonetheless, it’s a day off from work and a nice long weekend at a point in the year where you can desperately use a day off from trudging to work through slushy and icy covered roads, teeth chattering as your car tries to warm up as it skids down the road. So, what better time to gather some friends, set out some good (warm!) food, and let the kegerator start flowing? Call it a birthday party if you want, but even if you don’t, it’s a great excuse to have some fun with family and friends.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that uses this long weekend as an excuse to get away for a few days, whether it’s to hit the slopes with skis or snowboards in hand, or just to cozy up next to a fire in a cabin in the mountains with your sweetie, be sure to bring along your mini kegerator if you have one, to save you from coming home with a big bar bill from the local tavern in the mountain town you are visiting.

By bringing along a mini kegerator on your trip, you can enjoy a nice mug or two of beer with your significant other or a bunch of friends (depending on who you’re with) in the comfort of your hotel room or comfy cabin. If you have a fireplace where you are staying, this is the perfect place to enjoy a drink from your mini kegerator as the snow gently falls outside. If you are vacationing with your kids, you can enjoy a quiet adult beverage once the kids go to sleep, rather than just grabbing a soda and a bag of chips out of the vending machine down the hall.

The best thing about bringing along your mini kegerator on a trip like this is that you don’t have to worry about driving on snow covered or icy mountain roads after you’ve spent some time over dinner and a few drinks. Of course, you should never do that anyway, no matter where you are, but it’s vacation time, so it’s nice to know you can still have a few drinks to relax and unwind right in the comfort of the place you are staying.

So, while its hard to find much of a correlation between Presidents Day itself and kegerators, there is certainly a time and a place for enjoying the contents of a kegerator – and celebrating a birthday (even if it’s a few presidents that lived long before your time) or relaxing on vacation are two perfect “kegerator moments”.
