Kegerator Forum: Undercounter vs. Standalone unit?

We're remodeling our basement to include a full bar with kegerator and bar fridge. Our question is, which is better - an undercounter vs. a standalone (rolling) unit. We're building the counter ourselves, so the height and venting are less of a concern than a retrofit.

Is there an energy saving or other consideration that would put the undercounter ahead of a standalone?

The main difference is that most undercounter units have a special fan for cooling and venting the compressor. If you put a freestanding unit under a tight counter/cabinet you may overheat and burn out the compressor.

That being said, I have heard of a lot of people who install the freestanding units under counters with no issues. Just make sure there is plenty of venting room around the unit.
