My only reason for wanting to purchase one is to avoid the deposit charge of $30.00. I know i'm cheap....WHATEVER!

What is the average cost of a keg and would it be worth it. I know I could just keep the keg and be done with it, but does anyone think it would be worth buying one?

The cost of a keg depends on the type of brew it has in it. American brews can run from $70-$120 while most european start at $100 plus.

As to whether a kegerator is worth the purchase can only be answered by yourself. Do you want it mainly for the novelty of having one or do you consume a lot of brew?

Personally, I just plain ol love draft beer and gladly pay the price to imbibe.

I was just trying to get an empty keg to avoid the deposit.

I looked around at the same thing. Couldn't find an empty shell for less than $30. I would just pay the deposit on your first keg and keep the shell, probably the cheapest way. (unless you can somehow steal one from somewhere)
